The original idea was not a website. It was a WhatsApp message to a friend explaining why a cheap smart plug refused to stay connected to a standard fibre router. That message turned into a long-form post, and the post got enough shares to convince us there was an audience for honest local testing.
2021
We stopped reviewing gadgets in isolation and started installing them in actual households across Johannesburg and Cape Town. This meant dealing with load shedding schedules, older electrical wiring, and routers that were not always in the ideal spot. The reviews got longer, but they also became far more useful.
2023
A turning point came when we refused to publish a glowing review for a brand whose devices kept disconnecting from 5 GHz-only networks. We published the problems instead. That decision cost us a few review units but earned us a reputation for being straight with readers.
